“What should I do?” Liza asks her mother. Liza is crying. “I don’t want to leave the children. And they need their father.”
She tells horror stories about her marriage. Her husband shouts at her. He beats her. He sleeps with other women. He drinks a lot and plays cards.
“Stay with him. You have to stay with him. And when the children grow up you can leave him.”
“But who will want me when I am old?” she asks. “Now when I am young I can find a friend for me and my children but when I will be old… Who will want me?”
“There will always be men. But you have only these two children. You must think about them.” says the mother. She repeats the sentence so that Liza will remember and understand.
Liza goes home and after a terrible night with her husband she packs her luggage and takes the children to her mother. “I know you don’t like this but I am not going back.”
Living with Liza is exactly what Liza’s mother didn’t want. It is impossible to live with her.
