#27: I don’t trust you because you are poor

He is sitting in a restaurant. His girlfriend is sitting opposite him.
“I am not sure this is working out,” she says.
“What is not working out?”
“Our relationship.”
“Why do you think so?”
“I think we are not the people who are meant to be together.”
“Why not?” he asks confused.
“I don’t know. I just feel so.”
“But I love you.”
“I don’t know.”
“What is it you don’t know?”
“I am not sure if I can believe you.”
“Why?”
“Because you are poor.”
“ I am not very poor. Poor people don’t eat in restaurants, don’t go to the theatre and don’t play bowling. But let’s say I am poor. Do you think I say I love you because I am poor and you are rich?”
“That is what I don’t know. Would you love me if you were rich? You would surely find someone younger and more beautiful.”
“Would you believe me if I were richer?”
“Yes, you would be more believable, if you had more money.”
He stands up and takes out his wallet. He takes out a piece of paper. He shows it to her. It is from the bank. It shows how much money he has in his bank account. She is shocked. He is the richest person she personally knows.
“I am sorry, I have to go now. Please, don’t contact me. Don’t call. Don’t write. I am going to find a partner who doesn’t love me for my money.”
