Darcy and Down syndrome
Darcy is pregnant. She is at the doctor. She is doing a pregnancy-test. The pregnancy-test will tell her if her child will be healthy. The test is for one specific illness, Down syndrome. When a person has Down syndrome, they have problems and difficulties during life. Healthy people don’t have such problems and difficulties. Darcy does this pregnancy-test because she is in the risk group.
The doctor takes a needle and puts it through her lower belly. He takes out a tiny bit of liquid. He puts the liquid in a box. The nurse takes the box to the laboratory. The doctor tells Darcy to dress up and go home. The results will be ready tomorrow. Darcy goes home and talks to her husband. They have to decide what to do if the child has Down syndrome. If the child has Down syndrome, Darcy can stop the pregnancy.
After four months she is in the hospital and she is holding a baby in her arms. The child has Down syndrome. Darcy is very happy. She has a baby-girl.
